How has your knowledge of technology standards changed after this module? Reflect on your own use of technology standards in your classroom and personal use.
Description
My reflection for module 1 is based off of the book reading assignments including The National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers booklet and chapter one of ISTE's Technology Facilitation and Leadership Standards as well as posts in the discussion boards. My reflection is also based of my introduction to VoiceThread and my experience of creating a wiki.
Impact
My knowledge of technology standards has changed drastically since completing this module. Before this module, I did not even know teachers had technology standards. I have learned I need to become very familiar with the standards in order to become a better teacher. Not only do I need to understand and be able to apply the NETS-T but I need to go above and beyond those standards and learn and apply the NETS-TF standards if I wish to become a technology facilitator. I have learned that the standards are important and should be used by everyone, teachers, students and administrators alike because we are living in a global community. The technology is out there, not only do we need to be using it, but we need to be using it effectively.
Before this module I used to think that it was okay that I did not use technology in my classroom because I teach Kindergarten. I realize now that just because my students are just entering school and only learning the basics does not give me an excuse for not using technology. Even at a young age my students are experienced with technology and want to use it. I look forward to implementing the use of technology in my classroom.
Through the use of VoiceThread and Wikispaces, I have already learned about two types of technologies I can use in my classroom. I can use wikis with my students for reflections, just as I am using it for reflections myself as a learner. I can also use VoiceThread to introduce topics and have "guest speakers" in my classroom. I have learned it is important to see how to use technology as a learner first before I try to teach it.
Intent
From now on, I will continue to become more familiar with the technology standards. I will attempt to use them to guide my instruction. I will not shy away from technology because my students are young. I will share my knowledge with my colleagues if they wish to learn about the standards as well. I will apply my knowledge of the technology I have learned about so far in my classroom when appropriate and when I feel it will best impact student learning.
